All our Teachers are trained and certified by Bikram Choudhury. Certification involves 9 weeks of intensive teacher training, two classes a day and over 500 hours of study.
Why is certification important?
Bikram yoga is a highly specialized and precise form of yoga. To get the greatest benefit, you need a teacher who is also highly specialized. Bikram Choudhury personally trains and certifies his teachers, ensuring that his methods and philosophies are preserved.
Amber Fidler – Teacher and Studio Owner
I took my first Bikram Yoga class in January 2007 after being advised of the benefits and enjoyment of the class. At the time I was dealing with significant emotional upheaval. I found that during class I was able to quiet my mind and find some peace during a time of unrest.
I practised Bikram Yoga along side a regular gym routine for the next 18 months and gradually began to realise that Bikram Yoga gave me everything I needed, physical as well as mental. The gym visits became less as Bikram Yoga increased until October 2008 when I cancelled my gym membership.
During early 2009 I realised that I no longer saw my life without Bikram Yoga. I loved the positive mental and physical effects that I saw not just in myself but in the students around me. As I started talking to my fellow yogis I was continually amazed by stories of people’s rehabilitation through regular practice; from weight loss, arthritis and high blood pressure to rehabilitation of numb limbs after a stroke. I thought to myself ‘I would like to help people achieve that’.
In November 2008 I decided that a career change was necessary. 419 yoga classes later I completed the Spring 2010 Teacher Training held in Las Vegas. Shortly thereafter, I commenced teaching Bikram Yoga in Miami before returning to teach in London and subsequently Sydney. I feel honoured to be able to share my passion for Bikram Yoga with others.
Hannah Patterson - Teacher
Hannah has been teaching since 2009 after graduating in Palm Desert, California. Bikram Yoga has given Hannah the opportunity to travel and teach in America, Australia and New Zealand as well as Manchester, Leicester, London, Brighton....and now Bournemouth!
Hannah is in the hot room most days as she believes consistent Yoga practise is the key to maintaining a healthy body and mind. Bikram Yoga has helped Hannah to overcome a back injury of her own, something which gives her an ability to empathise with students that come to yoga for the same reasons.
When Hannah isn't sweating, she loves to eat cake, read inspirational books, chat with like-minded people and immerse herself in the beauty of the Universe.
Gerry Lopez - Teacher
Gerry grew up in Mexico and moved to England 12 years ago. His background is in financial markets working for Banks and Hedge Funds in London and Monaco. At the same time he has always had a profound interest for self-knowledge and internal growth. Hence, for many years has been involved in yoga philosophy and hatha yoga. In recent years he also dedicated some time to psychology studies and recently decided to become a Bikram Yoga teacher in order to share with other people the amazing life changing benefits that Bikram Yoga can bring to your life.
Lucy Blenkinsopp - Teacher
I discovered Bikram Yoga whilst on holiday in Colarado in 2007 with my husband Keith and 3 children. On my return I was sad to discover that the nearest place to practice was either in London or Brighton. At that time we lived in Guildford.
Since I felt that Bikram Yoga needed to be part of my life, I made it my goal to move us all to Brighton to live by the sea and to have Bikram Yoga in our lives permanently. We eventually moved to Brighton in Sept 2009 and I signed up straight away at Bikram Brighton.
Beginning a regular practice at 49 I discovered that I was fairly stiff and lopsided, but I loved the focus, discipline and the energy and soon became addicted. My next challenge I felt had to be Teacher training. I knew that I had to become a teacher and spread the good news of Bikram Yoga. So after battling with my stiffness by doing many 30 day challenges and dedicating as much time as I could to practicing Bikram Yoga to improve not just my body, but also my view of me, I finally went to Teacher Training.
Finally in LA with The Boss, Bikram Choudhury - WOW! I was convinced I would be the oldest, fattest and stiffest and the list goes on. To my surprise I found Teacher Training filled with 400 people from 26 countries of all ages, shapes, colours and languages. What an experience I had in those nine weeks. I would like to share what I learned from Bikram every time I teach you in class.
As exciting as the incendiary world of commercial litigation was for Andrew, he discovered something uniquely rehabilitative and energising in the Bikram series some years ago in Sydney after adding a hairline fracture to a femur to a list of distance running injuries. Immediate results followed. Having been a victim of the “yoga’s not for me” naysayer crowd, being in the hot room for the first time was a revelation. Invigorated, mentally focussed and an undiluted curiosity were what followed from his first class and those benefits have continued with him now for some years, even after completing the challenging but transforming experience that was teacher training in Acapulco in 2008. Andrew finds regular inspiration from leading students in their practices and in seeing them progress, grow and even, occasionally, smile.
