First Time Students

Beginners are welcome! You do not need to have previous yoga experience to try a Bikram Yoga class.

Each class lasts 90 minutes and is practised in a heated room. Each posture is repeated twice.  It’s a challenging class for everyone and at many points during your first several classes you may feel a little dizzy, light headed or even nauseated. This is normal. It takes several classes to become acclimatized to the heat. If you have any of these sensations; rest!  These feelings will disappear as you become acclimatized and your body detoxes. Listen to your body, breathe and relax, and you will be fine.  Avoid eating 2 – 3 hours before class.  Prior to that a small quantity of simple, easily digestible food is recommended.
Be sure to hydrate enough during the day prior to class, ideally drinking 1.5 litres of water in the hours leading up to classes. Large quantities of caffeinated drinks or processed foods can affect your body's ability to tolerate the heat, so please cut down on these items in preparation for class.

Be prepared to work hard, sweat and leave class feeling better mentally and physically than you can imagine…..

What to expect after your first class

You might find yourself feeling extremely energetic and experience difficulty sleeping. Don’t worry, this is a good sign that the yoga is truly filling you up with energy.

You might feel very tired after class. This is also absolutely normal and a good sign that your body is cleansing. Your energy levels should be restored to normal after several classes.

You might feel sore or stiff the day after your first class. Come back to class as soon as possible! Your body is waking up and coming alive and you want to keep the process going!

You might feel nauseous, dizzy or have a headache after class. This could be a sign that you are dehydrated. Please drink lots of water before returning to class. Or it could be a sign that you were trying so hard that you weren’t breathing normally. Please breathe normally through your nose during every posture.

You might experience some skin irritation. This too is normal; it means that the skin is releasing toxins. Showering directly after class will wash the toxins away. It will also help normalize your body temperature.

You might feel very hungry after class for a while, or you might lose your appetite completely. Both reactions are normal. If you are concerned about your weight, don’t worry too much either way. Once you get into a regular practice pattern, your appetite and your weight will normalize. You’ll find yourself feeling and looking leaner and younger.

How Often Should You Practise?

Bikram designed this yoga as a daily practice. The more often you come to class, the quicker you will see results and benefits. At least 3-4 times per week is recommended to see real changes; Bikram devotees typically practice at least 5 times per week.
